234. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he is aware that car insurance loading is taking place by some insurance companies based on age; and if insurance companies are allowed to discriminate on age grounds. [44882/24]

Under Section 56 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, motor insurance is required to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place. However, the provision of insurance cover to individuals is a commercial matter for insurance companies. An insurance policy is a private contract between the insurer and the client, based on the risks assessed by the company. Therefore, I am not in a position to comment on the matter.
