The building project for the school referred to by the Deputy is one of many major school building projects, designed and constructed, delivering accessible infrastructure, in accordance with a granted Disability Access Certificate (DAC), which is a statutory approval.

The project for the school included the provision of a single lift which is consistent with the design from the architectural planning permission stage and detailed design stage and complies with Part M of the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations 2009 (S.I. 351 of 2009) which prescribes the procedures to be followed in this regard.

The design and provision of a single lift complies with the Building Regulations (TGD Part M) and with the Department of Education’s Technical Guidance Documents.

In order to avoid any pupil travelling unnecessarily long distances, a school would need to consider its timetable to use alternative suitable classrooms nearby and use of the classrooms closest to the existing lift. In this way, accessibility can be managed both through the provision of a lift in the building and through practical local solutions.
