The regulation of the small public service vehicle (SPSV) industry, including vehicle registration for SPSVs, is a matter for the independent transport regulator, the National Transport Authority (NTA), under the provisions of the Consolidated Taxi Regulation Act 2013 and 2016. I have no role in the day-to-day operations of the SPSV industry.

Vehicle requirements for vehicles intended to be used as SPSVs are set out in Schedule 2 of the Taxi Regulation (Small Public Service Vehicle) Regulations, 2015. I am aware that the NTA has produced a list of vehicles, sorted by make and model, that indicates whether or not a vehicle may meet statutory requirements. This is known as the 'Suitable Vehicle List' and is available here: www.nationaltransport.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Suitable_Vehicle_List_13_07_2023.pdf. Before a driver intends to buy a vehicle to use as a taxi or hackney, they must check the Suitable Vehicle List and the Initial Suitability Inspection Manual, available here - www.nationaltransport.ie/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Initial_Suitability_Inspection_Manual.pdf, to ensure that the vehicle is likely to be suitable for that purpose.

I have referred your question to the NTA for direct reply to you. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within 10 working days.
