Question 138: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if her attention has been drawn to the fact that in the event of the death of a general practitioner, a patient must await the appointment of a new permanent doctor before transferring to another panel and that this creates the anomaly that the transfer may take considerably longer than the normal three month period required to transfer to a new doctor; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Under the Health Act 2004, the management and delivery of health and personal social services are the responsibility of the Health Service Executive. This includes responsibility for the provision of General Practitioner services under the General Medical Services Scheme. Accordingly, my Department has requested the Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Executive to arrange to address this matter and to have a reply issued directly to the Deputy.
