Question 131: To ask the Minister for Education and Science further to the Adjournment debate of 6 November 2003 concerning art teacher qualifications, if she will act on the apology recommended by her own inspectorate for the severe career damage caused by the failure of key Department personnel to wind up her Department's hazardous technical schools system of art teacher training in the 1970s; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The matter of art teachers who failed to become fully qualified through the technical schools examinations system, which was wound up in 1988, was examined in the course of discussions with the teachers' representative bodies. Arising from these discussions, a course was organised by my Department which gave such teachers the opportunity to become fully qualified. The course, called the NUI diploma in art teaching, was a one-year course run by the National College of Art and Design in the 2001-02 academic year and again in the 2002-03 academic year.
