- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Future-proofing to Improve Life and Longevity for Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (6 Nov 2024)
Dessie Ellis: I thank Professor McCarron and everyone else for attending. It was interesting to hear we have the strongest data in the world, which we do not normally hear, especially when it comes to people with intellectual disabilities and people who are ageing. That is very informative. Professor McCarron mentioned future-proofing to improve life and longevity for people with intellectual...
- Written Answers — Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth: Health Service Executive (5 Nov 2024)
Dessie Ellis: 922. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth if there has been any funding allocated in the HSE’s Capital Plan for 2025 to build a facility to provide for the additional services to be provided by an organisation (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. - Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Primary Care Centres (24 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: There is no doubt that these services are urgently needed. We welcome them, as do the residents. We have raised this matter over so many years and, at last, we are making serious progress. For how long does the HSE propose to lease the space in Omni Shopping Centre? I am curious to know the costs of both the rent and fitting out of the property. Do we have a timescale for when the centre...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Primary Care Centres (24 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: The Government's plan to roll out primary care centres across the country is a necessity. With regard to an area in my constituency of Dublin North-West that encompasses Santry, Whitehall and Beaumont, which would be regarded as an area of high density when it comes to population and which is constantly growing, there are plans to provide a number of essential health services for the area....
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Tolls (24 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: 101. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he could exempt public service vehicles, such as taxis, from the peak-time toll prices (€12.50) at the Dublin Port Tunnel, as this incurs a substantial extra cost to a taxi fare which is passed onto the clients (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. - Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Health and Well-being for Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (23 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: The issue I came across was of a young lad with Down's syndrome who could not get a tooth removed and had to search everywhere. Doctors were not signed up to this or helping out and I found it to be really disturbing that he went two, three or four days or whatever it was in pain and without being treated. It is one of the things I have encountered.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Health and Well-being for Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (23 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: What is the law relating to someone who refuses to allow their children to be vaccinated, if the child has a disability or otherwise, as for whatever reason they have an objection? Is there a law or do we just have to go along with the person? What is the situation?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Health and Well-being for Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (23 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: I know there is no law but I am curious as to whether there is any sort of mechanism that compels people to do it in some way.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Health and Well-being for Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (23 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: I thank Mr. Dempsey and everyone for their input. Before I go to the questions I have, I just want to say that in CHO 9, we have many problems very similar to what has been said about school places and people getting diagnosed. We have young kids on the waiting list for long periods. That is an ongoing thing. A lot of work has been done but there is a serious problem there. It appears...
- Affordable Housing: Motion [Private Members] (22 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: In a major homelessness and housing crisis, the Government has put forward a solution to these chronic problems by putting in place a scheme that is restrictive in its design and prevents the family home from being passed on to children. If the Minister had an opportunity to develop a policy or scheme to tackle the housing crisis, in particular the general lack of affordable housing, why did...

- World Mental Health Day: Statements (10 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: Is féidir gan amhras.
- World Mental Health Day: Statements (10 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: Tá ceann amháin maith go leor. Today is World Mental Health Day. It is a day for raising awareness of mental health issues. It is also a day when we talk about mental health in a way that breaks down the stigma around mental health. It is a day that shows those struggling with mental health issues around the world that people really care about them, empathise with what they are...
- World Mental Health Day: Statements (10 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: Tá mé síos le haghaidh ceithre nóiméad go leith níos déanaí.
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (10 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: There are serious concerns among people with disabilities with regard to the requirement to carry out a means test when making an application for disability allowances. Many with serious disabilities can fall just outside the threshold for the allowance. Their quality of life is severely affected as a result. Can this be looked at urgently and can the Government eliminate the need for a...
- Spending of Public Funds by the Government: Motion [Private Members] (8 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: This Government has had plenty of opportunities to build a legacy of competency, stability and fiscal rectitude. Instead of a legacy of achievement, this Government can boast of a legacy of crisis, ineptitude and incompetence. The Government has a responsibility to help the vulnerable in society, particularly those who struggle each day because of a disability, mental health issues or...
- Written Answers — Department of Health: Suicide Prevention (8 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: 520. To ask the Minister for Health if the HSE provides any funding to a local service (details supplied) currently or has provided funding at any time in the past; if not, if the HSE be willing to enter into a service level agreement with the service to provide funding towards a manager and to assist in the day-to-day running of this vital local service; and if he will make a statement on...

Dessie Ellis: It is a cover up.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Habilitation and Rehabilitation – UNCRPD Article 26: Discussion (2 Oct 2024)
Dessie Ellis: There is great work done by An Saol, the Neurological Alliance of Ireland and Multiple Sclerosis Ireland. We have heard all the issues in the Dáil about multiple sclerosis. The urgent need for early intervention constantly comes up. That applies to all the services once there is a serious incident and someone gets a brain injury or otherwise. Early intervention is so important. ...
