Social Welfare Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Seán Sherlock: I am conscious of the time and that other colleagues have tabled amendments, so I will be brief and speak specifically to my amendment. Where people lose office or cease to be Members, they can find themselves in the invidious position of having no payments due to them. Notwithstanding High Court actions or otherwise, the question also arises as to whether the Minister can, by statutory...

Social Welfare Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Creed: It is not my duty to reply, but I can imagine the headlines if it did not receive all-party support. Will the Minister confirm whether self-employed people will have access to carer’s benefit as a result of this budget?

Social Welfare Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Heather Humphreys: Yes, they will now be able to apply for carer’s benefit, which is-----

Michael Creed: To be welcomed.

Social Welfare Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Heather Humphreys: It will help some people’s situations. My point remains the same. Deputy Sherlock knows well enough that it is a case of all for one and one for all on this matter.

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Amendments Nos. 7 and 8 are related and will be taken together.

Social Welfare Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Paul Donnelly: I move amendment No. 7: In page 4, between lines 16 and 17, to insert the following: “Report on extending parent’s leave and benefit 8. The Minister shall prepare and lay a report before the Houses of the Oireachtas on extending the full duration of parent’s leave and benefit by 4 weeks and that the report shall be presented to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on...

Social Welfare Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (16 Oct 2024)

Heather Humphreys: I thank the Deputy for tabling this amendment. Regarding extending parent’s leave and benefit, the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has responsibility for parent’s leave policy and I have responsibility for the associated benefit payment. Parent’s leave and benefit are available to eligible parents within the first two years following...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Pre-Agriculture and Fisheries Council: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Collins: I welcome the Minister and the officials who are here today. The main bulk of my questions come from the fishing sector. Last week, when I met some officials I said I had been at a meeting a few days previously. It was the AGM of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation. The best people to educate me are the fishermen on the ground. If we were speaking about farming, it would...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Pre-Agriculture and Fisheries Council: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Collins: As I said, this is how the Brexit deal was done. Zonal attachment was used. Why can it not be the same when trying to protect our fishermen now? That is the argument they are making. It is reckless overfishing by Norway, the Faroes and Iceland. The Minister can put forward the argument that we are part of the EU, but why is the rest of the EU not putting sanctions in place to stop this?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Pre-Agriculture and Fisheries Council: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Collins: If Irish fishermen do not come out well from this, it will lead to disaster. It is a disaster at present, as well the Minister knows. We have had many a debate on it. I mentioned this last week and there are loads of other issues on which the Minister is to come back to me - I accept that - but there is great frustration that there is a lack of communication. Apparently, there was a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Pre-Agriculture and Fisheries Council: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Collins: I greatly appreciate that. There are other issues but I will not bring them up. I am to be contacted about them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2024: Motion (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: Or a nose. I thank the Minister and the officials for coming before the committee. Politicians get a lot of emails and I have a question for the Minister because I cannot fathom it. In all the various horse sectors, everyone seems to be falling out with everyone else and everyone is bringing each other to court. What is wrong in an industry that gets so much money? Are the procedures...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2024: Motion (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: It is in all of the sectors. In Connemara at present it is nearly impossible to get books. We are constantly getting emails about different problems in different parts. The Minister knows my views on the books. In fairness, the Department is able to hammer out 1.5 million or more cattle books without a bit of bother, efficiently and quickly. I understand DNA must be checked but I am...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2024: Motion (16 Oct 2024)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I know.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2024: Motion (16 Oct 2024)
