- Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (5 Nov 2024)
Danny Healy-Rae: What did the Government do for them? It closed down the unit in Tralee. That is what it did.
- Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (5 Nov 2024)
Simon Harris: You would swear the Deputy was paying for the bus. The reality is that we are reducing wait times. We have opened up more ophthalmology capacity in the south west. The Deputy has pointed to additional capacity that exists in this jurisdiction that does not require anyone to be brought out of the jurisdiction. We will continue to do more to drive down waiting times.

- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2024)
Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Is the Order of Business agreed?
- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2024)
Mary Lou McDonald: It is not agreed. The Dáil passed the occupied territories Bill in 2019. That is more than five years ago and the Government has blocked it ever since. In 2022, the Government supported the renewal of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, giving Israel, a State in continuous violation of international law, the most preferential trading relationship possible with Europe. The Government...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: I thank the Chair for all his work, lest this be our last meeting of this term, and thank very much the secretariat and the staff and the Department for all its engagement. It is very much appreciated. I have a couple of questions for the Department and then the Climate Change Advisory Council. I was interested to hear Mr. Hogan talk about the rural housing guidelines. Was he suggesting...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: That would be in the format of a national planning statement whether or not that part of the Act is enacted at that point.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: As regards the projections Mr. Hogan mentioned which are showing growth in housing development numbers over the coming years, who are those projections from and what are they showing in terms of housing completions this year?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: The projections for this year, yes.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: The Department's position is that it is difficult to know in terms of the projections.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: There are a lot of challenges for compact growth, two of which are affordability and viability. There are also issues in respect of homeownership. We see a certain amount of housing development pushed out of urban areas into rural areas. There is obviously rural housing need but there can be urban-generated housing in rural areas that is pushed out for affordability reasons and because...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: I thank Mr. Hogan. I have two questions for the Climate Change Advisory Council. The fact is that 30% of housing development is taking place outside of built-up areas and that is a very high percentage. We have also problems with affordability issues related to homeownership in more compact areas. If we want to get to the levels of compact growth we need, those problems have to be...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: There are really good objectives and policy in this area but it seems we have been poor at delivery. For example, a huge number of data centres have been constructed but we have not realised the potential for district heating from that in terms of the heat generated. Is there something missing that needs to be in the NPF to ensure we start delivering on making use of excess heat from data...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Consultation on the Draft National Planning Framework (Resumed): Discussion (5 Nov 2024)
Cian O'Callaghan: This is something a good planning system would capture and would ensure happens. It may not belong in the NPF but if the planning system does not ensure we do things in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way that is feasible, then where will that be captured?
- Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (5 Nov 2024)
Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Thank you, Deputy. We will move on.
- Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (5 Nov 2024)
Danny Healy-Rae: -----and what the Taoiseach is presiding over. No matter how much they try to disentangle from each other, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party are one crowd. They might as well rename themselves and get a new party because that is what they are. The Taoiseach does not want to take on the Greens because they get ministerial posts and the posts of Taoiseach and Tánaiste for...
