Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Estimates for Public Services 2024
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary)
(17 Oct 2024)

Richard Bruton: Now that the Minister may have a little more time on his hands, he should listen to "The Rest is Politics - Leading", a podcast with Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, and the interview they did with Audrey Tang, the digital Minister in Taiwan. What Taiwan did around the co-designing of solutions is well worth a listen. It is amazing what was achieved in a relatively short period.

Maternity Protection Bill 2024 [Seanad]: Second Stage (17 Oct 2024)

Roderic O'Gorman: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." I am delighted to have the opportunity to speak on Second Stage of this important legislation. It is incredibly worthwhile legislation, which will have a very real impact on women at a very important juncture in their lives. The Bill provides for two main areas of reform. The first is to allow a pause in maternity leave for treatment...

Maternity Protection Bill 2024 [Seanad]: Second Stage (17 Oct 2024)

Seán Sherlock: I thank Deputy Kerrane for ceding time to me to speak on the Bill. The Labour Party broadly welcomes the Bill. I ask that an additional explanatory memorandum be supplied on the NDAs and the records. It would be good parliamentary practice if it were possible. We reserve the right to bring forward amendments on records and NDAs as well as the maternity leave protection elements of the...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (17 Oct 2024)

Mary Butler: I thank the Deputy very much for her question. Some €110 million of funding in this year's mental health budget, which will increase significantly next year, is paid out to various organisations and NGOs and different groups on the ground that deliver services. The onus is on each group to reach compliance with the regulations and the governance has to be in order. They can engage...

Verona Murphy: I said in Wexford.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (17 Oct 2024)

Mary Butler: It is absolutely untrue to say there are not 24-7 supports for people with mental health issues in Wexford. They can attend the emergency department in Wexford General Hospital, which will always be the first port of call, that is, an out-of-hours emergency department.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (17 Oct 2024)

Maurice Quinlivan: The issue of homelessness in Limerick has never been so bad. There is a complete absence of available emergency accommodation for those who desperately need it. Homeless service providers have spoken to me, as they do on a regular basis, to say there simply are not nearly enough beds available in the city. On any given evening, there can be up to 70 people sleeping rough. This part of...

Micheál Martin: The Minister is doing that. Some €303 million has been made available for delivery of homeless services in 2025. That is money going to local authorities, including Limerick, so they can provide emergency accommodation, homeless prevention tenancies and sustainable services. There have been very significant increase in funding for the housing first initiative-----
