Ábhair Shaincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Matters (9 Jul 2025)

Aidan Farrelly: I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 39 and the name of the Member in each case: Deputy Michael Cahill - To discuss a ban on pair trawling. Deputy Catherine Ardagh - To discuss the construction of a new school building in Ballyfermot. Deputy William Aird - To discuss GP and primary care services in County Laois....

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Public Transport (9 Jul 2025)

John Connolly: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire Stáit as a bheith linn ar maidin chun an cheist seo a fhreagairt. The Galway transport strategy was launched with great expectation in 2016. It was heralded to develop an integrated transport system where infrastructural development and improved services would be integrated, giving commuters a greater option rather than simply relying on the car all...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Public Transport (9 Jul 2025)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank Deputy Connolly for raising this very important matter. I am taking it on behalf of the Minister for Transport. The Department of Transport has responsibility for the provision of funding and setting of policy in relation to transport issues, including active travel. The NTA has responsibility for the allocation of funding to projects at local authority level and works with local...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Public Transport (9 Jul 2025)

John Connolly: I had a concern prior to the Minister of State's answer and, in fairness, the answer has gone some way to explaining the decision. There seemed to be a lack of co-ordination in the NTA between the public transport section, which might be responsible for public transport infrastructural development, and the active travel section. That needs to be looked at in future projects. I recognise...

Vote 6 - Office of the Chief State Solicitor (Revised)
(9 Jul 2025)

Colm Burke: I thank the Taoiseach for making time available to be with us this evening. With regard to the DPP budget, I see there is a 177% increase in the number of court dates in the Central Criminal Court. There is the fact that in 2019, there were 127 court dates in the Central Criminal Court and by 2024, those outside the Central Criminal Court were up by 572%; in other words, it was outside of...

(9 Jul 2025)

Colm Burke: Going back on the court dates, my apologies. There were 127 court dates of the Central Criminal Court outside of Dublin in 2019. By 2024, the number of court dates outside of Dublin was 854. That moves me on to the issue of opening a DPP office in Cork. I assume it has to do with having more Central Criminal Court hearings outside Dublin. There is a provision in the budget for the opening...

Colm Burke: There is a proposal to increase it by a further 20. That means there is going to be an increase in volume and in the number of criminal cases that will be dealt with. It comes back to my original question about the capacity within the service to deal with the convictions and sentences after that. I am just wondering if the next three to four years of that have been thought out.
