Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)

Darren O'Rourke: On the point that has been made about delivering it as quickly as possible, I urge the NTA to do everything it can - quarter 1 runs to the end of March - and bring March delivery back to January, or bring January back to December, November or October. A point was made earlier about school transport services and the opportunity for scheduled services to complement or substitute for them. I...

Darren O'Rourke: Mr. Ryan mentioned the number of mechanics who had been or are to be hired in the Dublin area. I was not sure whether it was 40 or 14.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)

Darren O'Rourke: Has Mr. Ryan anything to say about Dublin? The reason I am asking is that an issue was raised relating to Broadstone.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)

Darren O'Rourke: I ask Mr. Ryan get some clarification on that. I am particularly interested because the Meath bus services are largely covered by the Broadstone depot and we know that part of the challenge with those relates to mechanics in Broadstone. If they are not covered, I would make the case that Bus Éireann should be doing something similar to try to address the shortage.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)

Darren O'Rourke: Members have been saying very positive things about Connecting Ireland, and I echo those. My understanding is that this is a €56 million multi-annual programme and the NTA is working its way through it. I have always been critical that there has been funding of €8 million followed by €8 million, rather than €15 million or €20 million followed by €20...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Sustainable Travel Operations Update: National Transport Authority (10 Jul 2024)

Darren O'Rourke: I thank the witnesses for their engagement. I have previously raised an issue with some bus services in Meath, which I will again put on record. There is a regular call in Ratoath for a more regular direct service into the city - the 105X is the example – and for a direct service via the M3 parkway for people who might want to use the train. I will continue to make the case for...
