Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (27 Jun 2024)

Martin Browne: I propose that the petitions considered by the committee at this meeting and previous meetings may be published and that the replies from the Departments and other bodies may also be published. Is that agreed? Agreed. We have three petitions for consideration today. First is No. P00028/24, "Credit unions" from Mr. Brian Gould. It states: My Petition is to amend the Credit Union Act...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (27 Jun 2024)

Martin Browne: When it passes through the Houses, if this person wishes to submit a new petition at that stage, so be it. There is nothing we can do at this stage so we will deem it closed. Is that agreed? Agreed. That concludes our consideration of public petitions this afternoon. I invite members of the public to submit petitions via our online portal which is available at petitions.oireachtas.ie....

Committee on Public Petitions: Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman: Annual Report and Other Matters (27 Jun 2024)

Martin Browne: How many people work in the Office of the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman? Mr. Sloyan said it increased the number of staff. What is the trend as regards staff numbers this year? Will the office have enough staff to continue to achieve the success rate it has achieved in the past few years? Does it need more staff because of the increased number of complaints coming in?

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (27 Jun 2024)

Martin Browne: Other than writing to the Mental Health Commission to see if it can give us any other advice for the family. That is what we discussed in private session. It is a heartbreaking story to see a family member like that. I hope the Mental Health Commission will be able to come back with different advice for the family. Is that agreed? Agreed. Third is petition No. P00047/2024, “Vote...

Statutory Home Care: Statements (27 Jun 2024)

Statutory Home Care: Statements (27 Jun 2024)

Mary Butler: I welcome the opportunity to discuss statutory home care with my colleagues across the political spectrum. We may not always agree with each other, but I know we are all committed to helping people who need a high level of health and social care service to live at home for as long as it is possible and safe to do so. Home support is an essential service for thousands of people each day...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (27 Jun 2024)

Micheál Martin: In my view, local authority housing is fundamentally an issue for the local authority to deal with. It should have sufficient capacity to get in early to repair, refurbish or eliminate issues that give rise to mould developing in the first place.

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (27 Jun 2024)

Réada Cronin: What is the Government doing?

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (27 Jun 2024)

Micheál Martin: In this Dáil and Oireachtas, we constantly talk about local autonomy and local government, but every time something happens, we want to say the Government must do it. Local authorities have responsibility for their housing stock. It is interesting; in the affordable housing schemes, they maintain their housing schemes and their houses. Local authorities need to do the same. Maybe,...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (27 Jun 2024)

Imelda Munster: I raise the serious issue of dereliction in the town of Drogheda. There are more than a dozen buildings crumbling on the main thoroughfare in the centre of town. An historic building had to have a public safety notice served on it on 7 June. It caused disruption in the town centre for motorists, pedestrians, businesses, etc. The scale of dereliction in Drogheda would suck the life out of...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (27 Jun 2024)

Micheál Martin: I spoke earlier on this. There is no reluctance to strengthen the Act. I do not believe local authorities have been strong enough in enforcing the Act. That is a view I have. They might argue it takes too long and there are legal issues and so on which can go on forever. There are other ways to refurbish streetscapes and town centres. We also have to think about our town centres,...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (27 Jun 2024)

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Earlier, when Deputy Cian O'Callaghan raised the awful, tragic case of Mr. Shane O'Farrell, a number of Members indicated, and the Tánaiste suggested, that Members might talk to each other about this matter. If that is the case, I would be more than happy to convene a cross-party gathering of Deputies with an interest in the case. If people wish to contact me, I am happy to facilitate that.
