Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Rail Timetables: Iarnród Éireann (9 Oct 2024)

Darren O'Rourke: We enthusiastically support this project moving on as quickly as possible. To scan the horizon in respect of the M3 parkway and expansion of services, is there capacity on that line to proceed with Navan rail as quickly as possible? The consultants have all but been appointed and Irish Rail is looking towards the back end of the decade and hopefully early into the next one, all going really...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Rail Timetables: Iarnród Éireann (9 Oct 2024)

Steven Matthews: I have a final question to ask which is to do with Wicklow. The DART extension to Wicklow town, including a stop at Kilcoole, was included in the National Transport Authority's greater Dublin area strategy two or three years ago. I broadly welcome this initiative as we go into the winter. I do not agree, however, with a number of provisions in the legislation. The assistance given should have gone further this winter. We will deal with that...

Electricity Costs (Emergency Measures) Domestic Accounts Bill 2024: Second Stage (9 Oct 2024)

Ossian Smyth: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." The impact of the sharp rise in energy costs experienced in 2022 is still being felt. Households are paying on average 59% more for their electricity, and 90% more for their gas, than they were pre-crisis. This is despite the multiple rounds of price reductions announced by suppliers since 2023. Households are still in need of support...

Sale of Nitrous Oxide and Related Products Bill 2024: First Stage (9 Oct 2024)

Seán Crowe: Even though nitrous oxide ranks among the top three drugs used by young people, it garners very little attention by the media or policy-makers. We have all seen with our own eyes the evidence of its growing use. I gave the canisters the name "silver bullets" because children are playing Russian roulette with this gas. The use of the gas has led to death and serious long-term harm to people...
