Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Horse Racing Ireland (Amendment) Bill 2014: Discussion (15 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: Thank you. I apologise for not being here earlier, I was at another committee. Senator Mary Ann O'Brien touched on one question for the trainers. In their presentation the trainers asked to be associated with HRI rather than the regulatory body. Why is that the case, seeing as every other section within the industry is under the regulatory body? Why should the trainers be excluded? ...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Annual Report 2013 and Microenterprise Policy: Enterprise Ireland (15 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: I welcome the representatives. I congratulate them on last year's set of figures and the prospects are encouraging for this year. I served on a county enterprise board and we had good input from the Enterprise Ireland. I had a concern at that time about the funding allocated to county enterprise boards in comparison to funding from Enterprise Ireland. Is there any sign of an improvement...

Anthony Lawlor: Is that a gross or net figure?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Annual Report 2013 and Microenterprise Policy: Enterprise Ireland (15 Jul 2014)

Electoral (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill 2014: Second and Subsequent Stages (11 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: The Minister has engaged in electoral reform, which continues with the Bill before the House, to enable a Senator to be replaced in the Seanad. Electoral reform has seen the consolidation of counties. As a proud Kildare man, I am glad to see my county maintain its status. I wish the Minister well in his future trips abroad and look forward to working with him in future.

Electoral (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill 2014: Second and Subsequent Stages (11 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: I hope the Deputy is not slagging County Kildare.

Electoral (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill 2014: Second and Subsequent Stages (11 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: I welcome the opportunity to speak on what is probably the final occasion on which the Minister will bring legislation before the House. I thank him not only for the Bill but also for a number of things he did for the country in terms of electoral reform and for my county of Kildare. We have had a number of water treatment plants to ensure they continue developing within the county. In my...

Topical Issue Debate: Respite Care Grant Administration (10 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: No, mine is dead.

Topical Issue Debate: Respite Care Grant Administration (10 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: As is well known, I am so far up the backbenches that even the pigeons do not fly this high. I have no chance of getting a call, and I do not think the signal works in here. I thank the Ceann Comhairle's office for allowing me to raise the issue. It came to me from a constituent whose son, for whom she was the carer, had passed away. The carers are very important and the work they do is...

Topical Issue Debate: Respite Care Grant Administration (10 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: I thank the Minister of State for the comprehensive reply. I had not realised the people in receipt of the payment had been asked how they would like to be paid. Had I received the information in a response to a parliamentary question I would not have needed to ask about it here. It is clear that people prefer to receive it as they do. The cut-off date of 5 June seems to confuse people....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: General Scheme of Horse Racing Ireland (Amendment) Bill 2014: Discussion (Resumed) (10 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: I thank the Chairman. I welcome this opportunity to speak. I am coming to this debate from the jobs perspective. Both associations appearing before the committee are very important in terms of the jobs perspective. My brother in law, Ray Carroll, is probably a member of the organisation. For many years the Lawlors were always involved in horses, one way or the other. Like Senator Mary...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Action Plan for Job Creation and Innovation: Startup Ireland (8 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: Budgetary proposals should be kept simple, rather than aspirational.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Action Plan for Job Creation and Innovation: Startup Ireland (8 Jul 2014)

Anthony Lawlor: We should be pushing for this more in transition year and even at primary school level. I know that Intel is involved at primary school level in terms of new innovators. It is something the committee should be pushing, but it should also be pushed nationally. That is where we will built the base.
