John McGuinness: That is something the committee is conscious of.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (9 Oct 2024)

John McGuinness: I will also ask about the retreat.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (9 Oct 2024)

John McGuinness: I know. Mr. Makhlouf was perfectly right to do so and I was glad to see that the economy of Kilkenny benefited. Was it necessary?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (9 Oct 2024)

John McGuinness: Kilkenny was absolutely necessary. I read about the cost of the retreat in the Irish Independent. If it is an engagement, you circulate, mix and all of that. If politicians did it, we would be harassed by the general public for that kind of spending. Surely the work that was done could have been done without the elaborate spending that took place.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (9 Oct 2024)

John McGuinness: I must ask Mr. Makhlouf that question.

John McGuinness: How was the retreat paid for?

John McGuinness: It was not paid for by the contributions made by the banks.

John McGuinness: It was paid for out of the Central Bank's resources.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (9 Oct 2024)

John McGuinness: It was brought to my attention as an extravagant event. I would like to know more about the purpose and what the Central Bank actually gets out of something like that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Engagement with the Central Bank of Ireland (9 Oct 2024)

John McGuinness: Hold on one second. Let me be clear about this; I know the Central Bank cannot deal with an individual case.

Electricity Costs (Emergency Measures) Domestic Accounts Bill 2024: Second Stage (9 Oct 2024)

Darren O'Rourke: I am sharing time with Deputy Gould. I thank the Minister of State for his statement. We have been over this ground a number of times in discussing similar legislation. I broadly welcome this initiative as we go into the winter. I do not agree, however, with a number of provisions in the legislation. The assistance given should have gone further this winter. We will deal with that...

Electricity Costs (Emergency Measures) Domestic Accounts Bill 2024: Second Stage (9 Oct 2024)

Ossian Smyth: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." The impact of the sharp rise in energy costs experienced in 2022 is still being felt. Households are paying on average 59% more for their electricity, and 90% more for their gas, than they were pre-crisis. This is despite the multiple rounds of price reductions announced by suppliers since 2023. Households are still in need of support...

Sale of Nitrous Oxide and Related Products Bill 2024: First Stage (9 Oct 2024)

Seán Crowe: Even though nitrous oxide ranks among the top three drugs used by young people, it garners very little attention by the media or policy-makers. We have all seen with our own eyes the evidence of its growing use. I gave the canisters the name "silver bullets" because children are playing Russian roulette with this gas. The use of the gas has led to death and serious long-term harm to people...
