Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Regulatory and Legislative Changes Required for the Transposition of the Adequate Minimum Wages Directive: Discussion (24 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: My final question is for Mr. Reidy. His submission refers to the need to seriously look at public procurement as a lever and tool to promote collective bargaining. He asked why taxpayers' money should go to firms which deny their workers access to collective bargaining should they want it. That is interesting because it implies there should be a methodology in place to ascertain whether or...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Flood Relief Schemes (23 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister of State. As he said, this all started in December 2015, eight years ago. That is a long time ago. Is he satisfied the OPW and the council have enough resources to carry on with the work and the planning and move it on? Do they need more manpower, expertise, engineers or planners to move this forward? He referred to insurance on several occasions. Several of the...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Flood Relief Schemes (23 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: I would be very interested to know where that figure came from. Who came up with it? We have had flooding in 2015, 2018 and 2023. I am worried there might be another flood. I do not want to be wandering around the town in my wellingtons, helping people and pulling sandbags. I am getting too old for that. To be serious, this is devastating for the people affected. The Minister of...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Flood Relief Schemes (23 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Ceann Comhairle's office for choosing this Topical Issue this evening and I thank the Minister of State for being here. It is now over three months since Storm Babet, which devastated my part of the country, Cork, and Midleton in particular. The images from the town on the television screen were really frightening. There was water 3 ft or 4 ft high in houses, homes and...

David Stanton: I thank Mr. Gaffey for his presentation, for the work the Department is doing and for the money that is being spent. Will Mr. Gaffey talk to us about the fund for loss and damage? How does the Department see that working? What tangible impact will it have on the ground? How much will it be and where will it be spent?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Ireland's SIDS Strategy, Impact of Climate Change and Update on Development Co-operation: Department of Foreign Affairs (23 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: I thank Mr. Gaffey. He mentioned the issue of rising sea levels. This is something I am quite interested in. Deputy Cronin also mentioned it. I have been reading Moving to Higher Ground by John Englander, who is one of the global experts in this area. He maintains that some of the smaller island states will actually disappear completely. He mentioned a number of these islands on which...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence: Ireland's SIDS Strategy, Impact of Climate Change and Update on Development Co-operation: Department of Foreign Affairs (23 Jan 2024)

David Stanton: I apologise for interrupting. Would Mr. Gaffey agree that both the State and the global community are long-fingering the issue of sea level rise? There is a perception that it will happen in the future and will not impact on us. It is not being taken seriously by governments, the UN or anyone else. I am talking about the actual sea level rise.
