Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Verona Murphy: Could Mr. Conlon get the details for us?

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Verona Murphy: Could he please submit them to the committee as well? I want to move to coastal erosion. There are very serious issues in Enniscorthy, as Mr. Casey will be aware. Could he please give me the status of the flood relief scheme for Enniscorthy?

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Verona Murphy: I thank Mr. Casey. I want to ask about the PR consultant contract in respect of which the tender was withdrawn. Was there a reason for that?

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Verona Murphy: Is Mr. Conlon going to reappoint the current consultants for another year? I believe that is allowed.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Verona Murphy: Reports in the newspapers this morning indicate that Mr. Conlon was concerned about his reputation. I am sure he knows this already, but from the public's perspective and from our perspective in the context of value for money, it would be much easier to enhance his reputation if the mistakes made by the OPW are not continued. If we learn from them, Mr. Conlon will not need a PR consultant.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Danny Healy-Rae: The Greens say it.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Simon Harris: No, the Greens have never said that. I do not need to speak for the Green Party but it does not say that either because it follows the evidence. We saw figures published today that show more progress on emissions reduction, farmers yet again stepping up and, quite frankly, farming and agriculture making more progress than some other parts of our economy, which should be acknowledged as...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Mary Lou McDonald: It is great that we have it. You guys did not want it.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Simon Harris: We have it anyway - we can agree on that much - so it is now a matter of having a discussion about how to spend it. I am sure we will have that conversation again. That does provide opportunities in terms of how we will use that windfall tax revenue to invest further in infrastructure. I imagine we will have a longer debate in the not-too-distant future but I do not accept that this...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Richard O'Donoghue: The reason I got into politics - I have been a building contractor all my life and I am a block layer by trade - is that I want to help build for the future. I want to use my experience. I do not build for local authorities. I have always had our own jobs to do. For 40 or 50 years, we have been promised infrastructure. The Minister of State, Deputy Niall Collins, who is sitting behind...

Simon Harris: I have a Cabinet Minister from the Deputy's constituency in-----

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Richard O'Donoghue: The junior and now the senior since the Taoiseach stepped down. Only for that, there would-----

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Seán Ó Fearghaíl: Will the Deputy allow the Taoiseach answer?

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Simon Harris: I think the Deputy meant to say when I stepped up.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Richard O'Donoghue: Stepped up or stepped down, whichever.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Mattie McGrath: It is like Lanigan's Ball. He stepped out and I stepped in.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (22 Oct 2024)

Simon Harris: When I became leader, I appointed a Minister from the Deputy's constituency to the Cabinet. The Minister of State, Deputy Niall Collins, also serves the Deputy's constituency. Both of them advocate for the area. Statements of an absolute nature that no infrastructure has been delivered do not stand up to any degree of scrutiny.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Catherine Murphy: We will go for a second round of five minutes each.

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Verona Murphy: Mr. Conlon's statement was very ill-informed. Most of the modular builds constructed by Shomera actually exceed the lifetime he mentioned. My question refers to the modular build. What is encompassed in the 45 sq. m, from a living perspective? Does it include toilets, bedrooms, sitting room, kitchen?

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation Accounts 2023
Vote 13 - Office of Public Works
(22 Oct 2024)

Verona Murphy: That means there are two bedrooms at €442,000. I do not care if it is the most expensive, worst site in the history of the State. There is not a site in Dublin that has cost €289,000 as Mr. Conlon said in reply to Deputy Kelly, for groundworks. It must be remembered, the same preparation occurs for all constructed houses. It takes less time and it does not come in at that...
