208. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will explain the intransigence and indifference shown by Iarnród Éireann and the company’s resistance of every effort over a 27-year period made by this Deputy and others, including the local authority, to restore the protected structure that was once the boarding platform for the railway station, Kilkenny; if he will respond to the request from a railway enthusiast (details supplied) to extend the existing platform to include the protected structure; if he will fund a feasibility study regarding the suggestion that it be used as a community space; if he will set up an engagement team made up of all stakeholders to devise an appropriate use of the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. The operation, maintenance and renewal of the rail network, including stations on the network, is a matter for Iarnród Éireann (IÉ) in the first instance.

Noting the IÉ's responsibility in the matter, I have referred the Deputy's question to IÉ for a more detailed reply on the specific issues raised. Please contact my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 days.
