Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: The Deputy is a great expert in everything, including reference pricing.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: It is time for the Deputy to bring some honesty into this debate and stop the hypocrisy. He goes on about reference pricing, but as a practising doctor did he do a lot of generic prescribing? I would love to see his record on that.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: I would love to see the record of that. I would be very happy to acknowledge that if it is the case. The answer to having cheaper medicine is to get more non-branded drugs prescribed.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: I am simply responding to the hypocrisy the Deputy goes on with day in and day out concerning health matters.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: No. We will not outsource services like that to nursing homes. Nursing homes already have contract arrangements to provide long-term care. We have 30,000 long-term care beds in the country, some 21,000 of which are in the private nursing home sector, while 9,000 are in the public nursing home sector. The fair deal is working successfully. We do not anticipate outsourcing more activity of...

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: No, they will not.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: Many of them applied for the fair deal and will be beneficiaries of that deal. They will be better off.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: It is ironic that Deputy Morgan's party is in government in Northern Ireland where capacity is being reduced all over the place.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: I could list a whole host of initiatives that are being pursued in Northern Ireland.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: They are being pursued with the enthusiastic support of the Deputy's party. His party also formerly held the health ministry in the North during which time many closures took place.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: The Deputy seems to have a two-island approach to many issues, not just in the area of health. He has a different approach to policy across the Border.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: In regard to Deputy Jan O'Sullivan's question, there are genuine capacity issues in Limerick and that is why we have sanctioned the new extension which will be operational at the start of 2012. That is needed not only for Limerick itself, but as part of broader reform in the mid-west region. Limerick has some of the most dynamic doctors in the country in the accident and emergency unit and...

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: We are providing more capacity in Limerick. In general, however, the problems being identified in accident and emergency departments in some hospitals have to do - not exclusively, but in the main - with how those particular hospitals function. Our effort is focused on ensuring they function to the appropriate standard that is required.

Hospital Accommodation (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: No, many hospitals do not have an issue.

Schools Building Programme (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: I thank Deputy Deenihan for raising this issue. I am responding on behalf of the Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, who cannot be present. I thank Deputy Deenihan for his very kind remarks. Perhaps he will pass them on to Deputy Reilly, with whom I have just had a robust debate. The latter does not share Deputy Deenihan's perspective.

Schools Building Programme (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: That is true. Absolutely. Modernising facilities in our existing building stock, in addition to meeting the need to respond to emerging needs in areas of rapid population growth, is a significant challenge. The Government has shown consistent determination to improve the condition of our school buildings and to ensure that the appropriate facilities are in place to enable the implementation...

Health Services (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: Cluain Arann Welfare Home provides residential services to people over 65, with a range of dependency needs. Many of these residents are capable of living independently and require minimal assistance in a home-from-home environment. The management of Cluain Arann Welfare Home consists of a director of nursing and here are 7.5 full-time posts, with all staff reporting to the director,...

Written Answers — Health Insurance: Health Insurance (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: I propose to take Questions Nos. 7, 10, 24, 113 and 115 together. I am very disappointed at the decision of the VHI to increase its prices so significantly from 1 February. There is no doubt that the increases will make it harder for those who benefit most from health insurance to renew their policies. I want to ensure that everyone is aware of the various alternative health insurance...

Written Answers — Primary Care Strategy: Primary Care Strategy (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: I welcomed the publication of the Report of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children on Primary Medical Care in the Community. The Report contains 40 wide ranging recommendations and in his foreword the Chairman highlighted that more emphasis must be placed on the physical structure of Primary Care Teams and providing community mental health services through those teams. He also...

Written Answers — Hospitals Building Programme: Hospitals Building Programme (13 Jan 2011)

Mary Harney: The new National Paediatric Hospital is a priority for the Government. The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board has formally asked An Bórd Pleanála for the project to be considered under the Strategic Infrastructure legislation. Two meetings were held with An Bórd Pleanála in November and December 2010 as part of the pre-consultation engagement by the Development Board. This...
