Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (3 Mar 2010)

Camillus Glynn: I had not intended to contribute but Senator Mullen put his finger on it. The veterinary profession has a pivotal role in this area. We cannot legislate for a broad spectrum because each dog will differ. I am sure the Minister is doing the best he can to safeguard animal welfare and I will reserve further comment until I hear what he has to say. Senators Mullen and Ormonde raised valuable...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Mar 2010)

Camillus Glynn: I support Senator Wilson's comments on the alacrity with which the Minister of State, Deputy Curran, has responded to the issue of head shops. Approximately ten days ago one of the national newspapers carried a report of a boy of about 12 or 13 whose mother had to come and collect him after he took one of these substances and he did not know where or who he was. That is an indication of...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Mar 2010)

Camillus Glynn: I strongly agree with Senator O'Toole on yesterday's court case. It has sent depravity to a new depth. It goes to prove the family in question was let down by all and sundry – the social services, school authorities and their neighbours. It also proves that where the safety and welfare of children is concerned, everyone should be cast in the role of a nosey parker. I would welcome the...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Mar 2010)

Camillus Glynn: There were several requests by hospital and nurse management for the upgrading of facilities at St. Loman's but the Health Service Executive did not carry out any improvements. It is easy for people to view a facility and claim it is not acceptable. The question that must be asked is why. Why were its patients for many years left unattended and uncared for? Nurses and assistant care staff...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Mar 2010)

Camillus Glynn: I spoke to a high-ranking official and negotiations are taking place. I will leave it at that as the industrial relations situation is bad enough and I do not want to aggravate it further.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2010)

Camillus Glynn: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. I preface my remarks by saying that many people in the dog breeding industry in this country and involved in the Irish Greyhound Board or other groupings are in the main very reputable. More than anybody else, they want to ensure the cowboys and cowgirls operating the infamous puppy farms are put out of business. If that happened yesterday, it would not have...

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2010)

Camillus Glynn: I thank the Minister. As an aside, I must indicate that I made a suggestion to the Minister and his response is extremely reasonable. I am concerned with one matter which has some form of correlation to this section of the Bill. I refer to the theft of small thoroughbred dogs. These animals are being stolen and then sold on at car boot sales. I want a stop to be put to such behaviour.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2010)

Camillus Glynn: I ask the Minister to ensure the practice to which I refer be eliminated.

Seanad: Dog Breeding Establishments Bill 2009: Committee Stage (Resumed) (25 Feb 2010)

Camillus Glynn: The dogs concerned should be confiscated and placed in the care of the ISPCA in order that appropriate homes might be found for them or that their owners might have the opportunity to retrieve them.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Feb 2010)

Camillus Glynn: Ba mhaith liom aontú go hiomlán leis an méid a dúirt an Seanadóir Ó Murchú mar gheall ar coicís na Gaeilge. Beidh clár ar siúl ar fud na hÉireann agus ar fud an domhain. Tá súil agam go mbeidh sé ar chumas an Tí aitheantas a thabhairt do teanga dúchais na tíre i rith na coicíse. Mar sin, tá mé dóchasach go gcuirfí leathlá ar fáil le haghaidh ráitis ar coicís na...
